"Elephant in the Room" Group Leader Guide - Week 3

In the third message of “Elephant in the Room,” Pastor Clayton King addressed same-sex attraction and homosexuality.

After first recognizing the cruelty and confusion so many people have experienced, Clayton shared God’s desire and design for sexuality within the context of a lifetime covenant marriage between a man and a woman. Those who follow Jesus as Lord, regardless of orientation, seek to live submitted to God and His Word.

Sermon Notes

We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23-24).
God’s desire is abundant life and human flourishing (Genesis 1:26-28 and Genesis 2:23-25).
God’s design is friendship, marriage, and family (Matthew 19:3-6).

Where do we go from here?
  • Submit our hearts fully to Jesus.
  • Continue the conversation in community.

Group Conversation Starters

  • What was your big takeaway from Sunday’s message? How does this subject personally affect you?

  • Why is the question, “What does love require of me?” so powerful? Can you think of personal situations where this question brings clarity?

  • We don’t all have the same circumstances or struggles. How do we have compassion for people in different situations?

  • Read Romans 3:23-24. How should the truth of these verses affect how we treat others? Why is self-righteousness so difficult to see in ourselves?

  • Read Genesis 1:26-28 and Genesis 2:23-25. How do we see God’s desire and design in these verses?

  • Why do many in the church think marriage is the pinnacle Christian experience? How can that attitude affect people negatively?

  • Why do you think we want people to behave before we welcome them? What can we learn from how Jesus interacted with people?

  • How do we know if we’ve placed our identity in something other than Jesus? What does it look like to find your identity in being a son or daughter of God?

Closing Thoughts

Jesus made a way for us. Sometimes we forget how far He brought us. It’s easy to forget that one time or another we all found our identity in something other than Jesus.

People change when they come into a relationship with Jesus. Let’s be challenged to show Jesus’ love as we have brave conversations with friends, family, and co-workers.
