"Elephant in the Room" Group Leader Guide: Week 2

In the second week of “Elephant in the Room,” Pastor Brad Cooper taught on the pervasiveness and power of pornography. Porn addiction is a problem in culture and in the church. It’s an issue we can’t ignore.

Though sexuality was part of God’s beautiful design, sin entered the world and distorted what was good. While pornography seeks to destroy through isolation and shame, healing and wholeness are on offer through the Gospel.

Sermon Notes

Three Important Truths about Pornography:

  1. Pornography is sinful. (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:27-30)
  2. Pornography is harmful. (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:27-30
  3. Jesus gives us a path forward. (Romans 8:131 Corinthians 6:18

Group Conversation Starters

  • What was your big takeaway from Sunday’s message? Why is it important to talk about this issue in community?
  • In the message, Brad said that pornography is not just a sin issue, but also a trust issue. What did he mean by that?
  • How does this subject personally affect you? What has the journey toward freedom looked like for you?
  • Read Galatians 5:1. What is the difference between living free from something and living free for something? How can Christians move past “white-knuckling” their purity to experiencing true freedom in Christ?
  • Read 2 Corinthians 3:17. What is the connection between God’s Spirit and freedom? What role do worship, personal devotion, and prayer play in our freedom?
  • Read Romans 8:13. What does it mean to “put to death the deeds of the body”? How do we practically do this?
  • How do gain the perspective and compassion needed to help someone when we haven’t had personal experience with an issue?

Closing Thought

Psalm 32:1 says, “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” Jesus made a way for our sins to be covered. Through His death and resurrection, we’re not only saved, but we’re also freed to live the abundant life He promised.

We must not hide in shame. Our vulnerability and honesty as a group will pave the way toward new levels with Jesus and each other.
